Senior Services offers free health-related classes and programs

Senior Services at Memorial Park Community Center, 510 Bert St., invites community members to take advantage of the following free classes and programs:
Diabetes Prevention – You Can Change Your Future; We Can Help: On Wednesday, Aug. 1, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., a session will introduce a new program designed to help prevent diabetes in people with prediabetes or those at high risk for type 2 diabetes. Participants who qualify for the program will be led by a trained lifestyle coach for one year, meeting once a week initially then transitioning to once a month for the last six months. All ages are welcome, and registration is required. Please call 423-434-6237.
Cooking Matters: On Wednesdays from Aug. 8-Sept. 12 from 10:30-11:30 a.m., those 50 and older are invited to learn shopping, cooking, and smart eating tips from Whitney Marshall with the UT Extension Office. Any number of the six sessions may be attended. Please call 423-434-6237 to preregister.
New Medicare Cards – Don’t be Scammed: On Monday, Aug. 13 from 10:30-11:15 a.m., those 50 and older are invited to discuss the recent scams, Medicare fraud prevention, and the top 10 questions about new Medicare cards with Harley Jeter with the FTAAAD TN SHIP program. Get the Facts About Cataracts: On Thursday, Aug. 16 from 1:30-2:30 p.m., those 50 and older are invited to learn about the leading cause of vision loss among those 55 and older, what symptoms to watch for, and the latest advances in cataract surgery with Dana Morganstern, from the Johnson City Eye Clinic. Senior Assistance Options: On Monday, Aug. 20 from 2-3 p.m., those 50 and older are invited to learn about area resources, including NET Trans and JC Paratransit, FTAAAD, physician group social workers, adult day care, in-home and nursing home care, VA AID and Attendance benefits for veterans and their spouses, and the Choice program. ABCs of Hepatitis: On Monday, Aug. 20 from 6-7 p.m., a session for all ages will describe the differences between hepatitis A, B, and C and discuss transmission, testing, and treatment for the different types. Please call 423-434-6237 to preregister.
